What's this all about?

For many people there is still a lot of doubt and debate concerning climate change, let alone the concept of what is called "peak oil".

While the former has been covered a lot in the papers, the latter has not got as much attention. Suffice to say that it is now expected that oil prices will not significantly move downward EVER, regardless of any short or long term actions taken by Kevin Rudd or any other politician.

Peak oil theory basically states that we are running out of easily extractable oil. For anyone who wants it, you can download a free document that explains this in more detail from my website here.

No cost, no strings attached. Have a read if you're interested.

Right now I want to avoid the debate about whether climate change is real or not, other than to say that every current serving leader of every major country around the world, and the leaders of the various opposition parties, as well as the CEOs of 100 of the largest companies have all completely accepted the reality of climate change. More details on that can be supplied if anyone is interested.

Finally, and for the record; I have no hidden agenda with any of this. I have nothing to sell, no political axe to grind, and no financial interest beyond the fact that I like everyone else would like a viable and enjoyable local community to be a part of.

Response from Hannah

I acknowledge I live in Darkinung country and thank and honour the traditional caretakers of this place.

I am so pleased to have read Simon's perspective, and I am rivetted to hear the community's ideas about lower carbon economy, here, where we live and how we are living under the present planning structure.

I have many ideas for and about the need and potential we have here in Bucketty and the mountain for reducing our carbon footprint.

I am excited by Simon's and your emails and attitudes. Perhaps our ideas on this urgent and persistent issue may have a place to be shared.

Ya Hu!

My passion is how to live more sustainably from today, empowering our lives from the grass roots up, from the inside out. I know very little about regional planning, but what I do know does not give me reason to wait for top down authorities to lead us.

I am nourished by Simon's timely approach.

Thank you,
Hannah

Out to the community

I think Simon is raising an interesting point here.

Perhaps we could make this a broader discussion that is if people are interested. So feel free to comment back to me and I engage the larger Bucketty group in the discussion (let's say for the first few emails after that a small group might want to continue).

Kicking off the discussion

I have been reading with interest the various emails going around the community mailing list regarding planning and information gathering for future economic development plans for the extended Wollombi area.

Steve Annis-Brown for example sent an email around a while back putting forward his views and seeking comment on required economic investment; use of land; socio/demographic profiles and aspirations of landowners etc. What I haven't seen (via email anyway) is much comment on how climate change and the rising cost of fuel - or specifically "the move to a lower carbon emissions economy over the coming decade(s)" - factors in to all this.

If nothing else I would think that the current - and predicted - price of fuel is a topic of some discussion at the moment.

Would you be able to tell me who, if anyone, is driving a discussion around the topic of what a lower carbon emissions economy means to the community, and of course share any views that you may have.

As it happens this is more than an intellectual exercise for me, as we currently have our house on the market in the UK and once it sells we will be moving back to Australia. Whether we live full or part time in our Bucketty property remains up in the air at present; nevertheless the view in the UK amongst forward thinking urban planners is that an emissions-reduced economic model should be a factor in any planning activities so I am wondering what's happening there.

Thanks and all the best..

A quick intro' from me

I am sure that no-one will remember me but my wife and I, with our then young daughter own a property off Private Road 1, Bucketty, and lived there for about 18 months before heading overseas for work. We thought that little overseas adventure would be about two years long, but here we are nearly ten years later and only just heading back. We have our house up for sale in England hope to move back later this year. We still own our property in Bucketty.

Meanwhile, I am lucky enough to have a job that is associated with my personal passion, which is "How do we deal with climate change?", or to put that another way "How do we achieve sustainability?".

Finally, and for the record; I have no hidden agenda with any of this. I have nothing to sell, no political axe to grind, and no financial interest beyond the fact that I like everyone else would like a viable and enjoyable local community to be a part of.
